When I heard Rev. Pat Roberson proclaim God is punishing the Haitian people for winning their freedom through combat I concluded that he failed to recognize that the United States of America got its freedom because a bunch of patriots decided that freedom was greater than life itself. Does Rev. Robertson see the Haitian people as chattel, so God must punish them for daring to seek freedom from slavery. As a boy I was enamored with the exploits of Toussaint L'Ouverture in leading the Haitian people in a slave uprising because he did not kowtow to slave owners. I think that the Haitian people got vilified by European and American slave owners who could not afford to have their slaves understanding that their freedom also could be won on the battlefield. The Rev. Nat Turner's slave uprising in Virginia got all the slaves involved executed when they sought freedom through combat. I am left to wonder if Rev. Pat Robinson is really a closet racist unable to contain his yearning for yesteryear's denigration of people of African descent.
