As a college professor who specializes in teaching mathematics at the college level to students coming from inner city academic deficient backgrounds, my experience suggests that the key academic problems occur in middle school. Therefore, I am overjoyed to see science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) gaining credibility in the eyes of middle schools students versus an enchantment with the ignorant gangbanger and thug persona. The media has a special responsibility to report on the accomplishments of today's nerds as much as we do on today's sports jocks. Today's jobs are guaranteed by the work of yesterday's nerds, so it is incumbent to identify today's STEM children to encourage their development to become guarantors of tomorrow's economic prosperity.
