Stem cell research is caught in the chasm between emotional principles and scientific promise. It is today's equivalence of The Galileo Controversy, "It is commonly believed that the Catholic Church persecuted Galileo for abandoning the geocentric (earth-at-the-center) view of the solar system for the heliocentric (sun-at-the-center) view." The National Cancer Institute gives a sobering assessment on the potential of cancer striking an American family. "Three out of every four American families will have at least one family member diagnosed with cancer." Is it just to tell 75 percent of America's families that your love one needs to die or have an awful quality of life because we will encumber research? Yet the real tragedy for America's research leadership is other nations will continue to make advancements as we sort out whether we will embrace unencumbered scientific advancements or our allow zealots to kill progress.

Stem Cell reasearch is important on many ethical and medical levels. We will get through this.

The ban is ONLY on EMBRYONIC stem cells. There are viable alternatives.

The controversy surrounding stem cell research led to an intense debate about ethics. Up until the recent years, the research method mainly focused on Embryonic Stem Cells, which involves taking tissue from an aborted embryo to get proper material to study. This is typcially done just days after conception or between the 5th and 9th week.

Since then, researchers have moved on to more ethical study methods, such as Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPS). iPS are are artificially derived from a non-pluripotent cell, such as adult somatic cells.
