I know of a situation where a chap nailed down the windows in his house and turned on the gas in hopes of committing suicide. Some boyhood friends talked him out of this suicide attempt. They thought he had overcome his mental crisis. However, they forgot that he still may be suicidal even though he and his wife appeared happy in public.
Years later we got the news that this chap had successfully committed suicide. He had gotten into his car with the engine running in a closed garage. His body decomposition was so great that his funeral was closed casket.
This suicide victim had retired. He often played golf. This chap probably had the best physical health of all of us.
This suicide was a public relations nightmare for his wife. It was even worst because the wife was in a losing battle with the grim-reaper herself with cancer.
Thus, marital suicide can have a destructive public image on the surviving families of the person succumbing to using it because for generations the public is left trying to conjure up rationales for this personal destructive action. It also suggests that we should not assume family and friends are fine after they have unsuccessfully attempted suicide.
