Gaining Marital Respect through Evolution not Revolution

A 53 year old chap floored me when he said he stayed married to his wife of 30 years only because he is keeping his promise to God. He expressed great disdain for his wife. The chap said that he and his wife have no children.

This chap dumped his emotional bucket on a very serious problem of disrespect by his wife and sister. He was incensed that he was attempting to sleep at 11:30 pm when his sister called to chat with the wife. This chap says he called out that the sister should hang up. The wife told the sister, “I never listen to him anyway!”

This chap’s pinup anger was worrisome for I hoped it might not one day lead to violent actions to garner respect in his own household. He expressed great disdain at his treatment by females.

I shared my concern for his wellbeing by pointing out that he was at the age in life where the diseases of aging as cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, and so on could alter his lifestyle overnight suggesting that he must stop living in a very highly emotional tense state all of the time. My comment grabbed his attention.

I wondered about how far he might go nonviolently to win respect in his wife’s eyes. I asked, why not leave home, since he had shared that he was a well-paid skill tradesmen. His face etched with a blank stare for he did not want to consider that option.

I, then, pointed out that he needed to shift his efforts from a revolutionary style to an evolutionary style. I said in a revolution you have blood and bodies everywhere but in an evolution change goes unnoticed. He bought into the idea of starting an evolutionary program of change and thanked me for chatting with him.

As this chap walked away, I hoped that he would calm his life down for he appeared to be a prime candidate for the grim-reaper’s wrath.

Interesting article, Sherman. While his religous views may be the cause like he said, it could also be complacency and a need to stay in his own comfort zone. After living with his wife for thirty years, it would probably be hard for him to leave that comfort zone and imagine what it would be like to live without her.
