Children can learn bad habits from fore parents that have a profound effect on their ability to make good choices in life; especially important when a fore parent is a gangster.
A great grandfather shared that he was brought into the numbers rackets as a child following his grandmother’s lead. This grandmother was rolling in money because she controlled a neighborhood numbers business for the big time gangsters.
This great grandfather said that he could not contain his greed once he started to handle the money. He started to skim off the top for he knew that some high rollers played as high as fifty dollars per day on numbers with a very low probability of them coming out, so he pocketed this money.
Then he said the big time gangsters got onto his skimming. I was waiting for him to tell that he heard there was a hit put out on him by these big time gangsters. He stunned me saying he heard there was a police raid imminent on his operation.
He explained that the big time gangsters merely turned your operation over to the police. This great grandfather said he was aware that the police were casing his operation. However, he grabbed some money and got out before the police hit the numbers operation. This chap moved from the East Coast to the West Coast for a number of years until his mother died when he returned to bury her.
After his mother’s burial, this great grandfather appreciated that the skimming situation had dropped off everyone’s radar screen. Furthermore, many of the players were no longer alive. The key lesson he pointed out was in yesteryear he had the big money where today he is pinching pennies. However, he commented that there are still numbers operations active today because they get the small bets that the state lotteries ignore.
I wonder how many times a comparable parental gangster scenario has played out with children today getting into illegal drug sells. I believe it is time to legalize some drugs to take the money off the streets and hopefully diminish the killings associated with gang turf wars.
