In 1993 my wife Gwynelle and I were interviewing couples who had been married 25 years and over when we found that almost everyone that said their marriage was happy could remember almost to the day they fell in love.
I recently ran across a couple in Battery Park, New Castle, DE who shared that they had been married 46 years. Their love story began in Dover, DE when the husband was in the US Air Force. The wife says she liked to dance, so she attended USO activities to help entertain the soldiers.
The wife says she met her husband at one of these USO dances. Although the attraction was immediate she did not expect to see him again. In the meantime, she was taking ribbings because people would say these USO girls were looking for allotment checks by marrying a soldier.
The wife says she was at another USO activity in Chester, PA when she saw her husband again. He was with another lady when their eyes met. The moment of truth was upon them for the husband had to decide which woman with whom he wanted to be. He walked away from the other lady; they say they are still happily married although the diseases of aging are redefining their marital relationship for things important yesterday are not important today.
The wife feels that people today give up too quickly when marital crises come. I shared that I knew Gwynelle only three days when I told my mother she would be my wife 47 years ago. Hence, we concluded that if true love is there you will find a way to come together and stay married.
