In the United States intercultural and interracial marriages and relationships are commonplace since the 1967 US Supreme Court ruling knocking down anti-interracial marriage legitimating these unions. President Barack Obama’s parentage was legitimated by this ruling taking away the right wing conservatives opportunity to exploit that the President was an out of wedlock child. However, I hear too much focus placed upon interracial marriage and little on inter-culture marriage.
When inter-cultural marriages go sour we might expect to hear of stories of one parent stealing the children then secretly moving them to a foreign nation. We might hear of stolen children in Europe, Muslim Nations, South America, Asia, and so on with the American parent fighting to get custody.
On Sunday (9/2/2012) a lady in the produce session at ShopRite in Wilmington DE recalibrated my thinking on the outcome of inter-cultural marriage. She said a male Jewish cousin married a woman who became a Roman Catholic. This inter-cultural family had one daughter who decided she was atheist.
The daughter’s grandfather died on her mother’s side and this atheistic child did not want a Catholic priest at the funeral. This lady appeared perplexed that atheism has reached the stature of a religion. Nevertheless, the priest showed up for the funeral.
I hear senior citizens complain about taking God out of public schools leading to the loss of moral values. Perhaps, we need to put God back into public education whilst allowing the atheists to opt out of religious activities.
